Bert R.J. Bolin was a Swedish meteorologist and climate scientist who is considered one of the founding fathers of modern climate research. He was the first chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and played a key role in the panel's formation and early years.
Developing the first global carbon dioxide budget: Bolin published a landmark paper that estimated the global carbon dioxide budget for the first time. His work showed that the atmosphere was not able to absorb all of the carbon dioxide emissions produced by human activities, leading to concerns about the impact of human activity on the Earth's climate.
Award of the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement.
Coordinating the first IPCC assessment report: Bolin was instrumental in coordinating the first IPCC assessment report. The report provided the first comprehensive assessment of the state of the Earth's climate and the potential impacts of human activity on the climate system.
